Ung is eagerly getting ready for his ideal exhibition. Yeon Su’s coworkers are amazed by how friendly she has become. Until now, she has kept her personal affairs very quiet, but this time she invites her coworkers to her boyfriend’s show. She is openly expressing her genuine happiness. Ung’s exhibition is going well, and after the show closes, Ung will surprise Yeon Su. Ung’s closest friend Kim Ji Ung does not go to his display. He has been working nonstop in his workplace for days since he does not want to go home. The explanation for this is because his mother has come back and requested a favour from him, which he refuses to do.

Ung waits at the gallery till after midnight awaiting Yeon Su, but she never arrives. Grandma Yeon Su is in the hospital, but she is too terrified to tell Ung. She feels bad for leaving Ung waiting and becomes concerned that she could have ruined their relationship once more. Yeon Su is rushed inside after Ung discovers her sobbing outside his home. He finally tells her the information he has been holding back. He wants Yeon Su to go with him while he travels to France to study architecture. After the terrifying experience of nearly losing her grandma, Yeon Su now has to decide whether to move in with Ung or continue their long-distance relationship. Which option will Yeon Su pick?

Why Kim Ji Ung Hates His Mother?

Since Ji Ung was a little child, his mother has always been both emotionally and physically absent to him. She left him to live alone when he was in high school, stopping by occasionally just out of politeness. Ji Ung stays late in the office and never leaves when she visits him. Until his mother returns, he virtually lives in his office or at Ung’s house. His mother, in his eyes, is a callous, self-centered person who believes Ji Ung has ruined her life.

Ji Ung never seemed to have a family, but everyone else did. Even though his mother occasionally visited and went, he still felt upset each time. She visits him unexpectedly this time and informs him that she has a fatal illness. She begs Ji Ung to record her because she wants to leave anything from her useless existence behind after the doctor informed her of her limited time. She makes an outlandish request that enrages Ji Ung, who is torn between giving in to his dying mother’s demand and leaving her to fend for herself.

Our Beloved Summer Season 1: Ending Explained

Both Ung and Yeon Su were reclusive, but Ung had advantages that Yeon Su did not. While Yeon Su doesn’t have parents and lives with her grandmother, Ung is the only child of his restaurant-owning parents. Yeon Su had to work hard to pay off her parents’ substantial debts while still leading a respectable life. Ung had no strong interests and merely desired to exist in peace and do nothing. He initially comes out as a spoilt youngster, but it soon becomes clear that what was really holding him back was his fear of rejection and failure.

Despite their breakup, they never dated anybody else during the five years they were separated since their hearts had always belonged to each other. They reunite to be a better relationship than they were before after running into each other again and realising their errors. Yeon Su tells Ung to travel to Paris alone after confronting her insecurities. She discovers that she was the only one to bring about her own melancholy, and she doesn’t want to prevent Ung from following his dreams. Ung concurs with her and tells his parents about his worries. He is reassured that his parents still adore him despite the fact that he is their adopted son, thus he is relieved of that responsibility. Both Ung and Yeon Su conquer their fears and begin leading happier and more courageous lives.

However, Kim Ji Ung follows his senior’s suggestion and decides to video his mother, the most agonising experience of his life, giving him the first and last opportunity to receive closure from his mother. NJ makes the same decision as the other three does—to become a brave individual who does not seek approval from others, despite the controversies. That summer, a single documentary changed the lives of a great number of people. Even though they had a lot of fun, happiness, worry, and tears that summer, they came out of it a better version of themselves.

The epilogue sequence implies that Ung and Yeon Su eventually get married and that their documentary becomes popular once more. Kim Ji Ung returns with a suggestion for the third episode of the documentary in response to demand. People felt sentimental about their own life as a result of the gentle and comforting emotions of this series. A second season that focused on their life after marriage would be fantastic.

Kim Yoon-Jin is the director of the 2021 South Korean romantic drama series Our Beloved Summer. Netflix is now offering Season 1.
